I had never worked with cardboard before. At least not any more than simple, childish, constructions. It felt like a daunting task to create an upscaled replica of a small object.
I was reconstructing my favorite necklace. A half inch cameo that my brother and mother bought for me in Italy when I was no older than one. I wanted to do their gift justice with a well assembled recreation.
I started by listing the different components necessary to make an accurate recreation. Then I broke down the cameo into sections, so that it wouldn’t be flat. Finally I calculated the necessary measurements that I needed to upscale the necklace.
After the planning stage, I began constructing. Thankfully, at the time of this project, I had just moved so I had plenty of cardboard to choose from. I made the frame out of a tv box and covered it in cardboard textured paper to create a smooth background. I created the chain out of standard moving boxes. I carefully measured each piece and scored the cardboard so it would bend. The woman was created out of a bed frame box, I picked it for the color. I sketched her out on large paper before transferring this template to the cardboard, this was to insure no mistakes. I applied this same method to her hair. Then to create details I carefully carved away the top layer of liner, giving the woman eyes, lips, and hair.
